Faulu Irrigation Leads the Shift Towards Climate-Smart Agriculture in Kenya
As climate change continues to disrupt traditional farming patterns through unpredictable rainfall, prolonged droughts and rising water challenges, Kenyan farmers are increasingly turning to innovative irrigation technologies to secure food production and improve their livelihoods.
Agriculture remains a key pillar of Kenya’s economy, contributing more than 20 per cent of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and providing employment to millions of people.
However, heavy reliance on rain-fed agriculture has exposed many farmers to climate-related risks, creating the need for sustainable and reliable farming solutions.
Among the companies supporting this transition is Faulu Irrigation LTD, a Nairobi-based agricultural technology firm established in March 2026 that is helping farmers adopt climate-smart farming practices through modern irrigation and water management solutions.
The company specialises in the supply and installation of irrigation systems, greenhouses, agricultural nets, solar dryers and water storage solutions designed to enhance productivity while promoting efficient water use.
Its range of products includes drip irrigation systems, sprinkler irrigation, rain hose kits, solar-powered irrigation systems, filtration units and water pumps, which enable farmers to maintain consistent production even during dry seasons.
Faulu Irrigation LTD Manager Mrs Anne Mutua said the company was established to address the growing challenges farmers face due to changing weather patterns.
“Climate change has made rainfall increasingly unpredictable, but it should not determine whether a farmer succeeds or fails. Our mission is to equip farmers with practical irrigation solutions that allow them to produce throughout the year while conserving water,” said Mrs Mutua.
She added that the company offers comprehensive support to farmers, beginning with farm assessments and system design, followed by installation, training and after-sales maintenance.
“We do not just supply irrigation equipment. We work closely with farmers to identify the right solutions for their crops, improve productivity and help them achieve sustainable returns from their farms,” she said.
Beyond irrigation systems, Faulu Irrigation LTD also provides wooden and metallic greenhouses, shade nets, bird nets, solar dryers and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) dam liners to help farmers increase production, minimise post-harvest losses and improve water storage capacity.
For farmers who have adopted the technology, the impact has been significant.
Geoffrey Wanyama, a farmer from Webuye in Bungoma County, said installing a drip irrigation system transformed his farming operations by reducing dependence on rainfall.
“Before installing the irrigation system, I relied entirely on rainfall and often experienced major losses during dry seasons. Today, I can harvest consistently throughout the year, my yields have improved and my income has increased,” said Mr Wanyama.
In Machakos County, farmer James Musembi said irrigation had given him confidence to continue farming despite frequent drought conditions in the region.
“Water is no longer my biggest challenge. The irrigation system has enabled me to grow crops even during prolonged dry periods, ensuring I have produce for the market and a reliable source of income for my family,” said Mr Musembi.
Agricultural experts continue to encourage farmers to embrace irrigation and other climate-smart technologies as Kenya works towards strengthening food security and building resilience against the effects of climate change.
