Paul Russo: Controversy Surrounds KCB CEO Over Pinewood Resort Attack Allegations

KCB Bank CEO Paul Russo finds himself at the center of controversy following allegations linking him to a violent attack at Pinewood Beach Resort in Diani, Kwale County, on November 17, 2023.

The incident, involving over 100 armed attackers, left staff and guests injured and caused significant property damage.

The attackers reportedly stormed the resort from the main entrance and beachfront, wielding machetes and crude weapons, in what has been described as an attempted hostile takeover.

Activist Moses Jaoko accused Russo and a KCB-appointed receiver manager of orchestrating the attack. This dispute stems from a KSh 5 billion loan tied to English Point Marina, another property owned by the family behind Pinewood Resort.

However, Pinewood Resort’s owners argue that the hotel is not part of the assets charged under the bank’s debenture.

Despite court orders barring the takeover, the attack proceeded, raising concerns about corporate misconduct and disregard for judicial authority.

Witnesses claim the attackers beat staff, robbed tourists, and disrupted operations for hours before police intervention.

The failure to make significant arrests or prosecute those involved has fueled public outrage, with many suspecting corporate influence and corruption.

The hotel’s owner, Alnoor Kanji, condemned the violence, stating it was part of a broader scheme to forcefully seize the property.

He expressed concerns about the safety of his business and the negative impact on Kenya’s tourism sector, which relies on international confidence in the country’s stability and rule of law.

The attack has drawn widespread condemnation from tourism stakeholders, with calls for an independent investigation into Russo’s and KCB Bank’s roles in the incident.

Activists and investors demand accountability, stressing the importance of protecting businesses from violence and intimidation.
