Pressure Mounts on KICD’s Charles Ong’ondo as He Pursues Term Extension Despite Age Limit Controversy
Pressure is building on Professor Charles Ong’ondo, the CEO of the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD), as he seeks to extend his term in office despite reaching the mandatory retirement age.
Ong’ondo, who assumed leadership of KICD in 2020, has faced growing opposition from board members and staff, who argue that extending his tenure would violate the organization’s age-limit policies.
Having taken over from Dr. Joel Mabonga, Ong’ondo’s five-year tenure has been marked by significant milestones, but also by several controversies.
Allegations of financial mismanagement, irregular spending, and the failure to adhere to sound governance practices have plagued his administration.
With his term set to expire in 2025, Ong’ondo’s bid for an extension is facing strong resistance from a section of the board and staff who are concerned about the institute’s future under his continued leadership.
“There are clear policies in place regarding the retirement age, and allowing this extension would set a troubling precedent,” remarked one board member, speaking on condition of anonymity.
“Extending his term could further damage the integrity and accountability of KICD, given the unresolved issues that have persisted during his tenure.”
Among the numerous challenges raised are issues relating to the improper allocation of funds, failure to remit excess revenues, and violations of the Public Finance Management Act.
These concerns have further fueled the opposition against Ong’ondo’s potential reappointment, with some employees expressing fears that his continued leadership could lead to further inefficiencies and governance issues within the institute.
Staff members have reportedly called on the board and the Minister of Education, Mr. Julius Migosi Agambo, to reject Ong’ondo’s bid for a term extension.
They argue that new leadership is necessary to restore transparency, accountability, and financial discipline at KICD.
