Norah Muendo: The Little-Known Woman Behind Nila Baby Shop
Norah Muendo, the dynamic entrepreneur and founder of Nila Baby Shop, has emerged as a prominent figure in Kenya’s baby retail industry, yet many remain unaware of her inspiring journey.
With a passion for providing quality baby products, Norah has successfully opened five branches of Nila Baby Shop since her inception into the business in 2018, transforming her vision into reality.
The name “Nila” is a tribute to her firstborn daughter, symbolizing the love and inspiration that fuels Norah’s venture.
The shop offers a wide range of baby clothing, accessories, and essentials, catering to the needs of parents across Kenya.
The Journey Begins
Norah’s journey into the world of entrepreneurship began with a personal struggle.
During her pregnancy, she found it challenging to source stylish and affordable baby clothes. This experience ignited a passion in her to create a solution for other parents facing similar difficulties.
With her husband’s unwavering support, she started small, purchasing an initial stock of baby clothes from Gikomba market.
“I didn’t make much out of the initial Ksh 14,000 stock,” Norah recalled. “I kinda gave up, but my husband encouraged me and provided Ksh 200,000 for a larger stock.”
After securing a shop, Norah faced a challenging beginning as her budget was quickly depleted by rent and shop design expenses.
With only Ksh 20,000 left for stock, she decided to leverage social media for marketing, a move that would ultimately change the course of her business.
Rising from Adversity
Despite initial successes, Norah encountered significant challenges that could have derailed her entrepreneurial dreams.
From March to August of one year, she was placed on complete bed rest, forcing her to close her shop temporarily.
When she returned, she faced five months of unpaid rent. “It was a tough time,” she shared. Yet, through sheer determination and resilience, Norah rebuilt her business, quickly regaining her footing.
Unfortunately, the challenges did not end there. When her landlord requested that she vacate the premises, Norah refused to give up.
Instead, she pivoted her business model to work from home, delivering products directly to customers.
“We did so well online that we couldn’t disappoint our clients,” she explained, showcasing her adaptability and commitment to customer satisfaction.
Today, Norah Muendo is a successful entrepreneur, running five Nila Baby Shop branches and positively impacting countless families.
